BANGKOK, Thailand – Krieng Kalptinan, a former deputy interior minister and five-time MP for Ubon Ratchathani, died peacefully on Tuesday at Vichaiyut Hospital after battling cancer. He was 74.

Born in Ubon Ratchathani, Mr Krieng was married to Rojana Kalptinan, a former mayor of Ubon Ratchathani Municipality, and the couple had three children. He earned a bachelor’s degree in arts and a master’s degree in educational administration from Ubon Ratchathani Rajabhat University.

Krieng entered parliament in 1995 as a Democrat MP for Ubon Ratchathani’s Constituency 1, defeating influential local figure Chaisiri Ruangkanchanaset in a notable electoral victory. He later joined the Pheu Thai Party and served several terms as an MP and as deputy interior minister, where he was involved in key policy areas during his tenure in government.

Throughout his political career, Krieng was known as a dedicated representative of his constituency, maintaining strong ties with his home province and working on local development issues. His passing has prompted condolences from across the political spectrum, with colleagues and former associates paying tribute to his decades of public service and commitment to his constituents.

Survivors include his wife and their three children. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in due course. The flag at parliament is expected to be flown at half-mast in recognition of his service to the nation.
